劇情：二戰期間，德軍的戰俘營裡，每個人都在渴望著自由。美國人希爾（史蒂夫•麥奎因 Steve McQueen 飾）在進入戰俘營的第一天起，就一直計劃著越獄。雖然他的十多次逃跑都以失敗告終，但希爾從未放棄。這次，希爾和英國軍官羅傑計劃秘密挖掘隧道帶領250人一起越獄。所有人都貢獻出了自己的一分力配合這次計劃，有人專門負責製作大家逃跑後需要穿著的平民服裝、有人負責做假證件、還有人負責儲備食品等等。然而就在他們的隧道大功告成那天，隧道卻被德軍發現了。逃跑計劃的日期一天天臨近，希爾他們又開始新一輪的挖掘工作。
